Project Summary

DR Anderson and its subcontractor team removed and replaced the roof structure on UNMC’s Central Utility Plant. Originally built in 1919, and expanded in the 1940’s, the existing wood timber roof structure was removed and replaced with modern steel fire resistant construction. The project was completed over the summer months while maintaining the fully functioning boiler plant below. A temporary scaffold/roof structure was built in the plant to protect boilers, insulation, controls, and high voltage electrical gear in the basement. Once the roof was opened for the new structure, the temporary roof structure kept all critical utility plant systems dry and operational through the summer severe thunderstorm season. Temporary shoring was erected and structure replacement was completed in phases to keep the brick/structural clay tile structure stable during construction. Combustion air handlers were added to serve boiler combustion air on new mezzanines inside the plant. Exterior improvements also included modern curtain wall system replacing original windows and brick repairs.
